  • I’ve been running Immich for a while, which aims to replace Google Photos. The interface is very nice and polished, and development is very active. It’s still considered “beta” with the occasional breaking change, but it has been fun to keep it running. Of course in order to feel really confident running something like this for your precious photos, a solid backup strategy is a must, so keep that in mind if you decide to look into it.

We have a 2.5 year old, of whom we have thousands of pictures. We had a Nixplay photo frame which used to sync a Google Photos album and worked well, but corporate greed has turned it into e-waste with recent changes in their subscription model.

So, I turned a Rasperry Pi and an old computer monitor into an even better photo frame using software called ImmichFrame. It’s pretty slick! I’m hoping it’s stable enough to maybe set up at the grandparents house eventually.

The fact that it displays photos from Immich, and not Google, just tickles me. I love it.

The only thing left to make Immich a total replacement for us is phone notifications. I want my parents to get notified when we add new pictures to the shared album, and the latest release hinted at that functionality being in the works… I’m pretty pumped to see where it goes.

I know my sister and brother both have subscriptions to things like iCloud and Google in order to keep all of their photos and videos on those services, so I wonder if they’d trust me to be their “cloud”, with virtually unlimited storage, for free. Probably not, but maybe one day. And honestly, but the time I pay for off-site backup, it probably costs me about the same as it costs them to use iCloud and the like.

    • Brush: AP Shave Co. - w/Maggard 26mm Badger
    • Razor: Koraat - 15/16 Full Hollow (9)
    • Lather: Barrister and Mann - Promises - Soap
    • Post Shave: Old Spice - Hawkridge - Aftershave
    • Post Shave: Dove - Men+Care Ultra-Hydra - Cream
    • Fragrance: Barrister and Mann - Lavanille - EdP

I have a theory now that I’m 23 shaves in on Straight Razors, that my edge preference for straights is similar to what I like in a DE blade. I like mild blades that aren’t excessively sharp (keen?). Still sharp enough to cut a whisker, but maybe with a little bit of resistance. Too much resistance would be tuggy and not good, but a little bit treats me well. Super smooth, no irritation, and a pleasant experience.

Thanks to @[email protected] for the new SOTD thread icon. It’s only visible with certain viewing methods like Alexandrite (https://gem.wetshaving.social/), Summit for android, and I’m sure some other apps.

Hope everyone is having a good weekend!

    • Brush: Maggard Razors - SHD Bulb 24mm Badger
    • Razor: Joseph Rogers & Sons - Near Wedge (4)
    • Lather: Barrister and Mann - Promises - Soap
    • Post Shave: Spearhead Shaving Company - Seaforth! Heather - Toner
    • Post Shave: Dove - Men+Care Ultra-Hydra - Cream
    • Fragrance: GLHF Workshop - Atriox - EdP

Atriox has some lasting power. I keep getting whiffs of it, and it’s excellent. I have another Brut frag (made by Brut), but it’s not as strong, doesn’t last nearly as long, and is a little too sweet. Atriox is stronger, lasts way longer, and has more of the “good stuff”.

This razor was so good today. I felt a high degree of confidence using it. I can see myself getting more near-wedge style razors in the future, but hollow razors are so much more ubiquitous.

I got two more old straight razors from AuctionNinja for $5 each and picked them up today. I haven’t had a change to look them over yet. One of them is in a weird old leather “condom” pouch, for lack of a better description. I should throw that part away, right? The other one is in a pretty typical straight razor box – I don’t care for razor boxes but part of me thinks I should keep it.

Today is the monthly BVWSC where a group of users shave with the same soap.

This month we voted on Raconteur, an amazing scent that is probably in my top 5. I’ve heard some negative opinions about the APR soap base, but I find it to be pretty great if you load enough of it. This is the V2 soap base.

    • Razor: Joseph Rogers & Sons - Near Wedge (3)
    • Lather: Chiseled Face - Ghost Town Barber - Soap

Another nice straight razor shave. My 20th.

Today should be a lot of fun. It’s the 1st annual Town Party hosted by the local concert venue. It’ll be outside in a baseball field. The headliner is Guster, a great Alternative band most famous in the 90’s but still putting out great music. They’re touring this summer with Barenaked Ladies, plus a few shows with The Mountain Goats.
